Hiring DJ equipment has evolved over the last 30 years and it is continually evolving with the advance of technology.
The DJ of today rarely travels with vinyls or CDs, but if they do, it is normally as a backup in case their PC or Mac was to fail. Most professional DJs now travel with an Apple Macbook or some other type of laptop, which will be uploaded with music files or software programs that will have two virtual vinyl discs or CDs, you can then load, cue and mix digital files from MP3 WAV etc., and they will automatically be beat matched.
The programs most used in this new generation of tools for DJ's are Virtual DJ, Serato with Scratch Live, and M. audio with Torq Conectiv, even though you can use these straight off your laptop with a USB audio interface. All professional DJ's still use either traditional Technics 1210 turntables or industry-standard Pioneer CDJ-1000's or 2000’s, and a digital mixer or an analogue one.
A useful tip about using digital music files on all of the software packages that you can purchase, is that they can tell you the recommended bite size to record music files, so they don't sound noisy, thin and compressed when playing through a professional sound systems.
